Uttar Pradesh cricket team
Uttar Pradesh are the reigning champions of both the Ranji Trophy and it's Limited Overs equivalent. Many young talents have passed through Uttar Pradesh and went on to play for the Indian cricket team, these included Uttar Pradesh captain Mohammed Kaif. The team has only won 1 Ranji Trophy and has come runner-up twice.
Competition History
Uttar Pradesh has not been strong in the Ranji Trophy cricket for any period in it's history. It's only victory in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group was in the 2005/06 season. It has come runner-up twice before, once in 1997/98 against a strong Karnataka side and once in 1977/78 against yet another Karnataka team. This means it is yet to make it's first appearance in the Irani Trophy (but this is to happen later this year).
It has been reasonable successful in the Ranji ODI Trophy and were the shared winners of the 2004/05 season (with Tamil Nadu the other winner). This year it is in a Quarter Final match against Karnataka.
