Sophie Newcomb College
H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College of Tulane University was established in New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1884, as a women's college. Josephine Louise Newcomb donated enough funds, in memory of her daughter, to make it one of the most financially secure schools in the South.
After Hurricane Katrina, a special Tulane "Renewal" Task Force recommended naming a single undergraduate college "Newcomb-Tulane College" and creating an institute called the "H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute."
