Karamojong
The Karamojong or Karimojong, are an ethnic group of semi-nomadic herders who live in the Karamoja region in the north-east of Uganda. Power is exercised by an assembly of elders, and the executive power is the prerogative of the class of warriors. Their main occupation is herding livestock, which has social and cultural importance.
Due to the aridity of the region, the Karamojong have always practised a sort of pastoral nomadism. Food and water is always a concern, as is interaction with other tribes.
The Karamojong have been in the middle of various conflicts involving cattle raids. They are an armed group, which is not rare in that region. All of Karamoja is a very insecure region, and the Uganda military as well as rebels groups are constantly involved in conflicts, which kills many people every year.
The Oropom, who also live in Karamoja region, are often erroneously referred to as Karamojong.
