Bandiagara

Bandiagara is a city in the Malian "Dogon Country". Bandiagara was the former capital of the Macina Empire. A sandy formation of cliffs and plateaux in the region is also known as Bandiagara.

The city is located ESE of Mopti. It is 63 km east of the Sévaré crossroads, starting point of the roads to Mopti, Gao, Timbuktu, Bamako and the Southern road to Burkina Faso. It is home to several distinct, cohabiting ethnic groups, the Peuls, Dogons, Bambaras, Malinké.

Tidiani Tall, El Hadj Omar's nephew and successor, chose the Bandiagara as capital of the Takrur (Toucouleur) empire. It is also Malian author Amadou Hampâté Bâ's place of birth.

The city's name is pronounced /Ban'yə'gar'ə/. The name translates roughly to "large eating bowl" -- referring to the communal bowl meals are served in.
