Adolf Dassler

Adolf Dassler (November 3, 1900September 6, 1978), also known as Adi Dassler, is the German founder of the sportswear company Adidas. The company's name comes from his nickname and the first three letters of his last name, as shown: Adi Dassler.

Both Dassler brothers were born in Herzogenaurach, Germany, where Adi lived and died. Herzogenaurach is the home of both Adidas and Puma.

Adi Dassler is represented in the 2003 movie "Das Wunder von Bern" (The miracle of Bern). The movie is the story of Germany's 1954 World Cup triumph. Adi's then new invention of removable studs for football boots is shown to be the key to the nation's success. This victory gave a huge confidence boost to post-war Germany, and the inclusion of Adidas in the movie can be seen as a huge propaganda victory for the company.

Rudolf Dassler, brother of Adi, founded the adidas rival PUMA AG.
